A veterans group that created a statewide list of gas stations that offer full-service refueling to drivers
with disabilities is hoping to take the list a step further.
Novi-based Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America wants gas stations
to also offer an easier, more dignified way for disabled drivers to notify
gas station attendants that they need assistance.

Michael Harris knows where he's going to buy gas. His decision has nothing to do with the price, but with a
button at two pumps at the Marathon gas station at Ford and Newburgh in Westland.
“I see this as a quality of life item,” said Harris. “It provides an independence
in traveling, it enhances the driving experience for the disabled.”

The simple act of filling a car's gas tank is nearly impossible for some
people with physical disabilities -- especially those in wheelchairs.
Twenty-six-year-old Angie Plager was crowned the new Ms.
Wheelchair Iowa over the weekend and plans to make the accessibility
of the state's gas stations one of her first awareness projects.
